What skills and responsibilities set Directors apart from Managers in your organization? What tips or advice would you offer to someone who has been moving laterally in roles for ever who would like to move up eventually to Director level?

I've been a people or project manager for about 8 years now. I see a lot of people my age who are Directors now. However, I haven't done great at applying directly for more senior level roles, and feel a bit clueless about how to move from point A to B. So, I'm curious if others have thoughts on this topic…
