What roles/jobs within nonprofits drive the most change?

I currently work in nonprofit marketing and I hate that the majority of my job essentially revolves around figuring out how to spend money to drive donations. While I understand the necessity of this, it just seems very disconnected from the actual work the nonprofit does.

I'm not looking for people to tell me marketing is essential. Admittedly, I am cynical and burnt out from working in the industry and I am looking for something closer to the ground level where I can actively see the results from my work.
