I'm a Volunteer Coordinator for an animal shelter. I noticed our volunteer shift numbers begin falling in mid/late July, and they've reached almost zero. We NEED volunteers in the shelter every day, and all my pleas- social media, email, text- have largely gone unanswered. It's like everyone just disappeared.
I know it's happening adjacent to the staffing shortage, but my question is why is this happening? My observations tell me that people are just emotionally completely exhausted from the past year and a half, and aren't doing non-essential stuff right now. My area also experienced an influx from the Delta variant, so that scared some people away.
What has everyone observed? Have you been able to overcome this, and if so, how?
