Volunteer Frustration – Suggestions, please.

I have been looking for an organization to volunteer with and have trialed a few over the last few months. My biggest issue is that I'm often simply an "extra body" and do not feel like I'm not truly contributing – I'm often lumped in with a bunch of high-schoolers getting their required volunteer hours and spend a lot of time standing around. I have a ton of customer service and project management experience as well as grassroots/outreach experience, but I'm not sure how to best translate that to a regular/long-term volunteer position (not just one-off events – happy to support those once I'm a "regular" volunteer) with an organization.

Any insight would be greatly appreciated.
