I want to introduce a new concept to reduce gun violence that intersects home insurance and gun ownership. In the state of Massachusetts, we are attempting to persuade the home insurance industry to offer a discounted policy rate to homeowner who do not have guns. It is called the Safe Homes Initiative and it is grounded in the available public health data that shows a strong correlation between gun(s) in the home and increased risk of accidental shootings, suicides, and homicides. Effectively, we're trying to create a "Safe Home Credit" for homes with no guns, similar to the way swimming pools and trampolines are treated from a policy standpoint.
Our strategy to persuade the home insurance industry is to assemble an Affinity Group of Massachusetts homeowners willing and able to switch their home insurance policy to the first leading insurer to offer such a policy discount. An Affinity Group is viewed by insurers as a pool of potential customers that they deem to be less risky. We're hoping that insurance companies respond positively to the Affinity Group and we have already had preliminary conversations with a few with good feedback.
If you are interested in learning more about this initiative please visit www.safehomesinitiative.org – where you can also join the Affinity Group.
We are on Twitter: (@initiative_safe) and IG: (@safehomesinitiative) social media channels if you'd like to follow along.
Lastly – we know this is a tricky topic and are hoping that when providing feedback or opinions – all discourse is civil and respectful. Thanks – SHI.
