Members asking to see budget?

I'm a member of a nonprofit whose finances I don't understand. Members pay annual dues, but I don't know what they're used for.

How appropriate would it be to ask for the budget? I guess it never hurts to ask, but I wonder how transparent nonprofits are with their members.

I'm on the board of another nonprofit and we're pretty transparent about our finances. We have an annual meeting where we present our budget to our members. I thought this was pretty standard among nonprofits.
