Is non-profit the way to go?

I am a single person attempting to digitally archive specific types of cultural data that were born in online spaces. Is there any type of safeguard for people attempting to preserve cultural history that comes from registering as a non-profit organization?

Intellectual property is difficult to navigate, but there are already laws in place protecting transformative works. I am hoping that putting years into connecting dots and collecting dates, names, and platforms would be considered in such a light. In addition to that, many of the voices being preserved are that of minority groups.

I am disabled, and have no income other than from my disability check, and therefore am unable to retain lawyers. Any information you may have would be helpful, even if it's simply, "No, this would not be the route to take." Thank you for your time!
