Interviewers never asking follow-up questions – is this like a thing in the non-profit field, or am I just unlucky?

I have a hard time telling how I'm doing during job interviews. But more annoyingly, I literally never get asked follow-up questions. It's like interviewers want to give me just enough rope to hang myself with, and never provide any hints about what kind of info they're actually looking for when they ask vague behavioral interview questions.

This is different from my one experience interviewing at a private company, which was much more conversational in nature. Is it just me? Or is this a thing for non-profit sin general?
