Grant writing job – how to break in

Hi everyone,

So I’m starting to think grant writing may be a direction I want to head in, but I have very little experience. There is a job listing here in my city for a contract-based grant writing position, but it asks for “at least two years” of grant writing experience.

I was considering emailing them my resume and/or simply asking if I could write a couple grants for them on a volunteer basis based on what I’ve read here and elsewhere online. Is this a bad idea?

What I do have: a degree in sociology, some experience (~1 year) working and interning at non-profits, about 4 years’ experience volunteering with nonprofits, and a study abroad program in humanitarian aid/NGOs in the middle east.
