Going from non-profit Budget Analyst to private sector FPA/Financial Analyst – doable?

Hi all,

First time posting on here and looking to hear some thoughts. As the title says, I am currently a budget analyst at a non-profit looking to make a move into a financial analyst/FPA role in the private sector sometime in the future (in 1 to 1.5 years, maybe even sooner if the opportunity arises).

A little background about myself – I was an auditor for one of the Big 4 accounting firms for about 2 and a half years, working mainly on banks and mutual funds. I didn't really want to do accounting for the rest of my career so I made the move to join a tech start-up as a Financial Analyst. Unfortunately, in that role I didn't really do much financial analysis duties if at all. As I progressed in my role there I actually ended up doing more and more work that was akin to revenue accounting, so that among other reasons, is why I left the job after 6 months.

I ended up getting role as a Budget Analyst at a non-profit organization right after. This is where I have been for the last 10 months and I love this job. First off, I'm really getting to work on what I wanted to work on leaving Big 4, which is doing more financial analysis based work as the big duties of my job involve budget development and budget management and forecasting. Secondly, the work life balance I have right now is amazing, and I get a lot of support from my management and leadership team in all my work endeavors. I'm really happy where I'm at and I have no urgent need to leave like I did with my last job.

With this in mind, I would like to return to the private sector one day. In the end, money matters and obviously at a non-profit the potential for more isn't there. Furthermore, specifically, I would also like to try my hand at tech again. However, even with the experience I'm gaining at my current job, I'm really concerned about the effect that working at a non-profit will have in how private companies will view my experience and resume. With this in mind, I had a few questions for you all:

  1. How much of a weigh down, in general, is it to be currently working in a non-profit and trying to go back into the private sector, not even considering the actual experience I have?
  2. Specifically in the FPA/financial analysis realm, is there more or less of a weigh down as well?
  3. If there is some negative to my non-profit position, how much longer could I be in this role to where I can balance both gaining the more experience and not pigeonholing myself into non-profit/government work (a few months, 1 year, 2 years, etc.)?

Apologies for the long post and I appreciate any thoughts that y'all can provide. I'm happy to provide further detail in comments as well.
