When hurricanes hit my home state a few years ago, I rangled up a group of volunteers from my college and we assisted the American Red Cross in managing several storm shelters. I did this three years in a row, by the third year operating as a shelter manager myself in conjunction with a handful of National Guard doctors. It was incredibly stressful BUT incredibly fulfilling, and scratched an itch both for service and a level of gravity.
I have since joined the military but have lost the "service", and frankly even the "excitement" aspect of my job. Frankly, while I found the American Red Cross to be a very poorly operated bureaucracy, I at least found what I was doing to be impactful and could circumvent the bureaucracy to get my shelters what they needed.
What non-profits fit this mold?
